Spanish media report that a fire on 13th July has destroyed the J.
Garcia Carrion factory in Daimiel in the centre of Spain. The fire started at 15:00 on Friday and destroyed the 20,000m2 factory, which was used for bottling wine and fruit juice. Fortunately nobody was hurt. The factory was built in 2003 at a cost of €40 million. The fire was visible 20km away. 150 people were directly employed at the factory and another 220 were indirectly employed by it.
There was no mention of sprinklers in the fire reports and no sign of sprinklers in the public photographs of the factory taken at its formal opening in 2003. Had a sprinkler system been fitted, most of the factory would still be standing.
